What is our responsibility, as individuals and as a society, to care for the vulnerable among us? Thy Neighbor explores this question, as it follows one of the largest homeless encampments in Northern California, and the community's response to it. What follows is an eyewitness account of the tensions that arise, actions taken and the consequences that follow. It is a portrait of a community in crisis, exploring the essential question, “What kind of a community do we want to be?” 

Biography:

Eliza Hemenway has over twenty years of experience in media making. Her mission is to tell stories that inspire hope and create positive social change. Eliza's documentary work has showcased in numerous international film festivals and arts venues including EuroDoc International Lab for Creative Documentary Production, American Animation and Documentary Film Festival, World Christian Arts Festival, Winnipeg Real to Reel Film Festival, Boden International Film Festival, LaborFest, Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival, San Francisco Frozen Film Festival, Roxie Film Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco State University, Academy of Art College, Jamaica Plain Arts Center and the San Francisco Public Library. Eliza founded and directed the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival and was an independent-film reviewer for NPR's KRCB-FM. She has also worked professionally creating multimedia content for organizations such as the Redwood Empire Food Bank, Salvation Army National Headquarters, City of Santa Rosa, Sonoma State University, the Arnold Arboretum, San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and more. 

Becky Hellwig is currently working as Impact Producer for Thy Neighbor, which she represented at EuroDoc International Lab for Creative Documentary Production. She brings a wealth of experience to her craft; her noteworthy projects encompass producing and directing the award-winning documentary film, Open Doors, and serving as the impact producer for May Tchao's, Hayden and Her Family, a documentary featured on America ReFramed, a PBS WorldChannel Program. Additionally, she has extensive experience working on public policy and government initiative campaigns.
