THE LEGACY OF THE DICTATOR - 50 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY IN SPAIN
(53 min) France/Germany/Spain

[watch trailer]

Directors/Producers: Cosima Dannoritzer, Pedro Barbadillo

Description:

In 1975, dictator Francisco Franco died and Spain embarked on its journey towards democracy. Viewers get a first-hand view of the past fifty years through the eyes of the Spaniards Óscar Martín and Paloma Rodríguez who were born on the very same day Franco died and grew up alongside the young democracy. Their biographies are intercut with the stories of expert witnesses–such as former judge Baltasar Garzón and filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar–who remember key moments of the Spanish “Transición”. A refreshingly clear look at half a century of turbulent and tense Spanish history that asks: What does a democracy actually consist of? And why is it so hard to make the transition from a dictatorship to a democracy–and then successfully defend it against the dark legacy of the past?
