HOLLYWOOD DOES ABORTION

Directors/Producers: Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater, Mike Attie

Description:

Fifty years ago, Norman Lear broke new ground when Maude, a grandmother with an unplanned pregnancy, unashamedly opted for an abortion on primetime tv. But if you’ve watched a show with an abortion storyline since then, you’re more likely to see abortions that are unsafe, shameful, averted at the last minute, or spoken about in hushed tones by characters that are younger, whiter and wealthier than their real-life counterparts. In a country where the right to choose is no longer guaranteed, Hollywood Does Abortion reveals the stories that Hollywood told us about abortion–stories that shaped our hopes, our fears and the rapidly changing political reality we now face.

Biography:

Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater the Emmy-nominated filmmakers have collaborated on seven award-winning documentaries for national and international broadcast since 1990 and are recipients of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Their previous documentary short, Abortion Helpline, This is Lisa, screened at Sundance, won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Doc at AFI Docs and was short-listed for an Oscar.

Mike Attie, a co-director of The Haunting of Pennhurst was also a director of Abortion Helpline, This is Lisa and directed In Country and two short documentaries that premiered at Sundance.
