A documentary following carpenter Shelley Halstead as she trains a group of three young, Black women in construction skills by rehabbing vacant and abandoned houses in West Baltimore, challenging generations of racism and sexism in housing. The mission is to transform a distressed block on Etting Street into a community of Black women homeowners, helping build generational wealth and stability in a neighborhood plagued by poverty, crime and neglect. When tensions arise within the diverse group of young women she's teaching to build and a suspicious fire destroys one of her buildings, Shelley is forced to rethink her vision of community.

Biography:

Dena Fisher is a filmmaker who integrates her clinical practice and creative storytelling to illuminate the lives, struggles and triumphs of those often pushed to the margins–Black women, unhoused families, queer and immigrant communities, people living with mental illness and returning citizens. She has produced documentary and promotional media that elevate community narratives and strengthen organizational impact for institutions such as Morgan State University’s Morgan CARES program, Johns Hopkins University’s Public Health initiatives and Black queer immigrant organizations. A two-time Addy Award recipient and Saul Zaentz fellow, Dena continues to create work that blurs the boundary between art and social work, turning stories of struggle into blueprints for change.

Amy Scott is an independent documentary filmmaker and a senior correspondent and host with Marketplace, the public radio business show. Her film Oyler: One School, One Year, about a Cincinnati school fighting to break the cycle of poverty in its Urban-Appalachian neighborhood, has screened at film festivals internationally and was distributed by American Public Television. She served as an envoy with the American Film Showcase and is the host of the climate solutions podcast How We Survive. Her reporting has earned several national honors, including a Gracie Award and Edward R. Murrow Awards.
