A former Catholic nun breaks her silence to reveal the abuse she endured at the hands of the Church’s most celebrated priest. In Nuns vs. The Vatican, Gloria’s jaw-dropping sexual abuse story is just the beginning as nuns start to break decades of silence, exposing a system built to protect power.

Biography:

Lorena Luciano is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, a fellow of the Sundance Institute, the MacArthur Foundation and the International Documentary Association, and an Artist-in-Residence alumna of the Jacob Burns Film Center. Lorena crafts intimate, cinematic investigations into power and moral reckoning through vérité filmmaking, immersive interviews and archival material. Her films have received Best Directing and Best Documentary honors, and have screened at major international festivals including Venice, TIFF, DOC NYC, Thessaloniki and Seattle, among others. Alongside her directing work, Lorena contributes as an editor to socially urgent films. She has served as a jury president and jury member at international film festivals and industry awards, reflecting her standing within the global documentary community. 

Filippo Piscopo won an Emmy Award for directing and producing It Will Be Chaos (HBO) and served as director of photography on the Oscar-nominated The ABC’s of Book Banning (MTV). A Canon fellow and professor of documentary filmmaking and cinematography, his work is grounded in a close, empathic approach to storytelling, using the camera to unfold intimate, character-driven narratives while bringing nuance to complex social issues. Supported by the Sundance Institute and the International Documentary Association,​ ​his films have screened at major international festivals including Venice, TIFF, DOC NYC ​and Thessaloniki, ​and have been recognized with Best Documentary, Best Director, Human Rights and Audience Awards.
