Eighty-one-year-old Batmunkh Luvsandash was determined to protect his homeland from mining. His activism led to the creation of a 66,000-acre protected area in Mongolia’s Dornogovi province, adjoining hundreds of thousands of acres already preserved through efforts by him and his allies. The region is home to Argali sheep, 75% of the world’s population of endangered Asiatic wild ass, and a diverse array of endemic plant species. The newly-protected area now stands as a vital bulwark against the country’s rapidly expanding mining industry.
