AND THEN THEY CAME FOR US
(47 min) Japan/US

THURSDAY 10/19, 7:20 PM (Session 1)

Directors: Abby Ginzberg, Ken Schneider
Producer: Abby Ginzberg

Description:
Seventy-five years ago, Executive Order 9066 paved the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights that resulted in the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. Featuring George Takei and many others who were incarcerated, as well as newly rediscovered photographs of Dorothea Lange, this film brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban. Knowing our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it.

Biography:
Abby Ginzberg has been producing and directing award-winning documentary films for nearly three decades. Her documentary, Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa, was an official selection at IFP and it won the People's Choice Award. Her film about judicial trailblazers Soul of Justice profiled Thelton Henderson, one of the first African American federal judges who is currently overseeing the reform of medical care in California prisons; Sowing the Seeds of Justice is about Cruz Reynoso, one of eleven children from a farmworker family who became the first Latino appointed to the California Supreme Court. Abby was the consulting producer for The Barber of Birmingham which was nominated for an Oscar. Her film Agents of Change, co-produced with Frank Dawson, features actor/activist Danny Glover, sociologist and sports expert Harry Edwards, among many others. This film tells the untold story of the civil rights movement on college campuses, which challenged the status quo and creating demands for black studies programs and increased minority representation on campus.

Ken Schneider has been editing documentaries for over twenty-five years. He loves travel, cross-cultural communication, languages and his film work reflects that. Films he’s edited tell stories from the Americas to Micronesia, from South Africa to Southeast Asia, from Palestine to a schoolyard a mile from his home. He loves character stories, where the issues explored are embedded in a person’s journey. He likes history that is told through the emotional experiences of those who made it. He is a husband and a father, and he sees his work as helping to impact the world his kids are growing into.
