The 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival (SFIFF53)
April 22-May 6

UNAFF is co-presenting four documentaries at the 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival which runs from April 22-May 6 with more than 100 unique programs of the finest independent, documentary and international cinema, combining a range of marquee premieres, international competitions, digital media work and star-studded gala events into the best two weeks of the year.

Last Train Home
http://fest10.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=42

(Dir. Lixin Fan, Canada/China co-production, 2009)
This visually stunning documentary draws viewers into the lives of a family of migrant factory workers on a grueling holiday journey back to their rural village—and the resentful child they left behind—in an intimate portrait of modern China.

The Oath
http://fest10.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=64

( Dir. Laura Poitras, USA, 2010)
In the second film of her post-9/11 trilogy, Poitras unfolds a complex portrait of two men once close to Osama bin Laden: an Al Qaeda insider driving a cab in Yemen and his brother-in-law, a Guantanamo Bay detainee. Through this personal story slowly unfolds an indictment of the “war on terror.”

Restrepo
http://fest10.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=76

(Dir. Tim Hetherington & Sebastian Junger, USA, 2010)
As unnerving as it is illuminating of the dangers, toils and absurdities of war, Restrepo is an intimate portrait of a platoon posted to Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, one of the U.S. Army’s most dangerous assignments.

Russian Lessons
http://fest10.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=78

( Dir. Olga Konskaya & Andrei Nekrasov, Russia, 2010)
The 2008 Russia-Georgia war forms the crux of this fascinating, highly personal examination of war, holocaust and memory, an extraordinary dual documentary exchange by Russian directors Olga Konskaya and oft-banned former Tarkovsky assistant Andrei Nekrasov.
