CHINA’S ARTFUL DISSIDENT
(58 min) Australia/China/France/US
[watch trailer]

Director: Danny Ben-Moshe

Description:

On the 30th anniversary of the June 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, China’s Artful Dissident shadows a Chinese political artist in exile as the artist clandestinely protests China’s abuse of human rights and its cover-up of the horrific slaughter of innocent students in 1989. Inspired by Tank Man—the lone protestor who stared down a convoy of Red Army tanks in Tiananmen—the artist travels the globe meeting survivors and fellow dissidents who share powerful first-hand testimonies. Like Banksy, the artist remains incognito, but unlike Banksy his life and that of his family are at stake, as the Chinese authorities—desperate to prevent his political art breaching their Great Firewall—close in on his identity.

Biography:

Danny Ben-Moshe is one of Australia’s leading documentarians who established Identity Films and Productions driven by a passion to tell stories that matter in entertaining, compelling and creative ways. Danny’s acclaimed films have screened on leading networks around the world, including the BBC, ABC and PBS, played at multiple film festivals, and gained rave reviews in the press from The Times of London to The Hollywood Reporter. Danny won Australia’s top documentary prize, the Walkley Award for Code of Silence which lifted the lid on child sex abuse in the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. As an observational filmmaker Danny enjoys taking viewers into a world they otherwise would not see, such as the epic family saga My Mother’s Lost Children (2017) which the New Statesman reviewed as a “funny, sprawling and powerfully touching film.” His stories are often fun and quirky, including Shalom Bollywood: the untold story of Indian cinema and Outback Rabbis for SBS in Australia, Danny spent over a decade as a university professor researching diasporas, racism and anti-semitism, Israel and Jewish identity.
